WM - Breath of the Wild Review

Released: 2017

Produced by: Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, developed and published by Nintendo, is an action-adventure game released in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U. This review focuses on the Switch version, as that's the one I've had the pleasure of playing. As a long-time fan of the Zelda series, I eagerly anticipated diving into this massive open-world experience. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. In this review, I will cover various aspects of the game, including the story, gameplay, graphics, and sound.

Story

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes place in the kingdom of Hyrule, with our hero Link waking up after a 100-year slumber. With no memory of his past, Link embarks on a quest to defeat the Calamity Ganon, a powerful and ancient evil that threatens the world. The narrative unfolds through a series of memories, quests, and interactions with various characters, which adds depth to the story and the lore of Hyrule. While some may argue that the story is not as linear as previous Zelda titles, the non-linear storytelling actually enhances the feeling of exploration and discovery.

Gameplay

Breath of the Wild redefines the open-world genre with its vast, interconnected world filled with diverse landscapes, hidden secrets, and countless side quests. The game introduces several new mechanics, such as a physics-based system that allows players to interact with the environment in creative ways. The game also features an impressive weather system, which affects the gameplay and requires players to adapt to different conditions.

The combat system has been revamped and offers a more strategic approach, with a wide variety of weapons and gear available for players to use. Additionally, the game introduces the Sheikah Slate, a multi-functional tool that provides abilities such as remote bombs, magnesis, and cryonis, which significantly impact puzzle-solving and combat.

One of the most notable aspects of Breath of the Wild is the freedom it offers. Players can tackle dungeons (known as Shrines) and quests in any order they choose, or they can simply roam the world and uncover its secrets. This freedom is one of the game's major strengths, making each playthrough feel unique.

Graphics

Breath of the Wild features stunning cel-shaded graphics that bring the world of Hyrule to life. The art style is both charming and visually impressive, with a remarkable attention to detail. The vast landscapes, from lush forests to snow-capped mountains, are breathtaking and truly showcase the power of the Nintendo Switch.

Sound

The game features a dynamic and ambient soundtrack, with music that changes based on your location and actions. The sound design is immersive and complements the game's atmosphere. Traditional Zelda themes can be heard throughout the game, giving a sense of nostalgia to long-time fans.

Conclusion

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece that sets a new standard for open-world games. Its engaging story, innovative gameplay, beautiful graphics, and immersive sound design make it a must-play for fans of the series and newcomers alike. This game is not only a standout title in the Zelda series but also one of the best games available on the Nintendo Switch. If you have yet to experience the wonders of Hyrule in Breath of the Wild, I highly recommend giving it a try.
